The enigma of the Witchblade presents an intriguing conundrum. I think that part of the charm of the show is trying to figure out the mystery packed into each week's story. Just when you think you have the answer, a new plot twist throws you off. This science fiction/action series is a roller coaster ride that will keep you guessing as you steal a look inside the life of New York Detective Sara Pezzini (Yancy Butler) and her partner Danny Woo (Will Yun Lee).
Sara is extremely strong, tough, and confident. At the same time, she is very cautious, gentle, and questioning of her own abilities. It is this duality, combined with the powers of the Witchblade, that creates a powerful and constant internal struggle as she tries to balance some semblance of a lifestyle while striving to exact justice. Her reluctant acceptance of the Witchblade seems to increase her ability to wield it against those whose intent is to cause pain and havoc.
The action sequences, stunts and special affects are fantastic. The screen freezes on an action shot and then gives you a full 360-degree peak at everything at once, rather than holding on one angle for a split second only to move on. The supporting actors are quite strong and help bring an air of believability to the series. Yancy Butler does a superb job in taking her character Sara to the "next level" -- she makes an exceptionally strong female role model. Co-stars Will Yun Lee, David Chokachi, Eric Etebari and the rest of the cast are equally superb. They help to create a fun-filled science fiction series that is not all shoot-em-up or out-of-this-world action, but is full of depth and has plenty of heart. Top Cow Productions seems to have all the right elements in place to take us on a wonderfully energetic and compelling fantasy based on a world of reality.
In the season premiere, "Emergence," it's a case of déjà vu when Sara Pezzini is once again chosen to wield the Witchblade. But when the sinister Kenneth Irons vows to take the powerful weapon from her, can she master its powers in time to defend her destiny?
