Stu Sheridan (Luke Perry) is a mid-level businessman who is living beyond his means. Stu's answer to most personal crises is, "I'll think about it tomorrow." Instead of dealing with his latest troubles, he suggests a deep-sea fishing trip off the Florida coast. A spendthrift, Stu takes along his fiancee, Julia (Polly Shannon - Mrs. Parker And The Vicious Circle), good buddy and lawyer Tommy (Dan Cortese - MTV Sports, Demolition Man), and another close friend, Gus (David Hewlett - Where The Heart Is, Forever Knight). They charter a provate fishing boat owned by Captain Louis Morgan (Dorian Harewood - Full Metal Jacket, I'll Fly Away). Morgan is a tough but fair man who keeps an eye out for Charlie Duval (Olivia D'Abo - Point Of No Return, The Wonder Years), a young woman with incredible powers of premonition whom Morgan has raised from childhood.

The fishing trip turns into a voyage of terror as the boat enter the Bermuda Triangle. Strange things begin to happen and an ocean liner, thought sunk long ago, appears and seems bent upon adding the inhabitants of Captain Morgan's charter boat to their endless supply of haunted souls.

Reminiscent of The Shining, and boasting some real scares, The Triangle really surprised me. The director, Lewis Teague, should be applauded for turning such potentially standard fare into something genuinely scary. Teague, who also directed Cat's Eye and Jewel Of The Nile, apparently earned the respect of his cast and crew, if the following comments are any indication.

Producer Frank Siracusa: "No matter how many times you've seen a scary moment, he (Lewis Teague) makes it work."

Dorian Harewood: "This is an acting movie, but it's also a thriller with special effects. So it's a tough thing to balance, but Lewis is really good at it."

Olivia D'Abo: "Lewis is a riot. He really knows how to have fun. He's obviously a veteran who knows what he's doing. Plus, he has a real knack for accentuating suspenseful moments."

Dan Cortese: "He's fantastic. He directed Cujo, you know, and I figure if this guy can create suspense out of a dog and a parked car, then he can certainly do a lot with this type of movie and this type of story."

And you know what? They're right.

The Triangle premieres on TBS Superstation on Sunday, 8/12/01, at 8pm (E/P). For true lovers of the horror genre, it's worthy of a tune-in.
